Raspberry Pi, which was originally launched in February 2012 is back with the third edition of the device – Raspberry Pi 3. The device has gotten incrementally better and the third edition is said to be 10 times better in terms of performance that the original and 60% better than the second edition. The 10 times performance boost is just in test result though and real world single thread application will have a 2.5x increase in performance.
Raspberry Pi 3 will be available at the same price as the Raspberry Pi 2 i.e. $35.
In terms of the specification upgrades from the Raspberry Pi 2, Raspberry Pi 3 will have a 1.2 GHz 64bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU and finally has integrated 802.11n wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.1.
Raspberry Pi has been a huge hit among developers ever since it was first launched. A number of developers have built different products specifically in the Internet of Things domain. The added power of a wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.1 goes a long way in enabling these developers to do more with their devices.
In terms of the connectors, all the things are in the same place as before. The board will still run through a 5V micro-USB power adapter. The company is also recommending the usage of 2.5A power adapter in case one is going to use power hungry USB devices.
The Raspberry Pi 3 will be available through a number of resellers in the US but when the board will arrive in India remains to be seen. The company will continue to sell the previous two generations of the device as well. The entry level Model A+ will still be available for $20 while models Raspberry 1 Model B+ and Raspberry 2 Model B will be available for $25 and $35 respectively. The company cites continued demand for these devices as the reason and it will continue to do so as long as there is demand.
On the release page of the device, the technical details related to the things that are present in the board have been specified. If you are a developer who uses or wants to use Raspberry Pi 3 can take a look at them here.
The Raspberry Pi 3 with all its power and the presence of wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.1 will go a long way for IoT developers for sure.
